These U.S. states and cities have the most cellular dead zones. How does your state rank?

Cellular service in the United States is not the same as traveling from one state to another. Some states have more dead zones than others, and researchers at Holafly reviewed more than 30,000 complaints filed with DeadCellZones.com to calculate a specific metric. The researchers calculated the number of cellular signal complaints filed per million residents, allowing for lists showing which cities, states and zip codes had the most cellular coverage issues.

Based on the data, Cincinnati, Ohio is the city with the highest number of dead zone complaints with 534 complaints filed per million people. ZIP code 45255, which covers Cincinnati, has the highest number of dead cell areas in the country with 6,570 reports per million people. Hawaii is the state with the highest number of complaints per million people (282), followed by Maine (264) and Vermont (252).

Part of the problem in Hawaii is that some residents don't want cell towers built in the state. Many came out to protest the plan before AT&T to build a new communications tower in Hawaii. John Sargent, Kauai resident, “I don’t care if I have reception,” he told Civil Beat in 2023. “In fact, I don’t really want to.” Sometimes you get what you want.
According to Hollafly, dead zone complaints hit a record high as recently as 2023 with problems affecting one in 10 calls. But last year that number dropped as 5G technology helped reduce problematic calls. And with 4G LTE and 5G network upgrades like carrier aggregation, which combines multiple frequency bands to expand capacity and increase network speed, “now we're able to take that two-lane highway and make it 20 lanes,” he said. Verizon spokesman Andrew Testa in 2023.

We gave you the worst city (Cincinnati) and state (Hawaii) for cell service in the US last year, so it's only fair that we tell you which state has the fewest dead zone complaints per million residents. South Dakota would be the state that had only 41 complaints per million residents filed with DeadCellZones.com.

Of the 20 cities with the most complaints, seven are in California and five are in Colorado. The worst California zip code for cell signal dead zones is El Segundo 90245 which had 1,158 complaints per million people. Half Moon Bay, ZIP code 94019, ranked next in the state with 969 complaints per million residents.

The Half Moon Bay Local Planning Commission announced a plan to replace the 50-ft AT&T A 75-foot cell tower at a nearby high school. The new tower will be built "away from high-use residential and student areas." We hope this will reduce the number of complaints about dead zones in the area.
