Mark Zuckerberg visits Joe Rogan and blasts Apple

[ad_1]

One complaint he made concerns the lack of impressive new products from Cupertino. Zook accused Apple of being complacent and sitting still for the past 20 years after the invention of the iPhone. He says it's not clear whether Apple is selling more iPhone units on an annual basis. The problem, according to Zuckerberg, is that each iPhone generation doesn't bring a lot of changes, so people wait longer between upgrades.

This is a very depressing outlook for Apple's iPhone business. Zuckerberg says that with iPhone sales flat or declining, the only way Apple can make money is to squeeze people. What he means by that is that Apple gets a 30% cut of what developers create in the App Store. In addition, CEO Meta also takes issue with the way Apple makes the peripherals that consumers buy for iPhones. Zuk cited the AirPods, noting that they are made in a way that prevents other companies from developing something that can connect to an iPhone in the same way.

Zuckerberg has been angry with Apple for years. What really piqued Zuck's interest was the Apple App Tracking Transparency feature that was added in iOS 14.5. This feature allows iPhone users to decide whether they want to be tracked by third-party apps for the purpose of receiving targeted advertising. Facebook initially estimated that app tracking transparency could cost it $10 billion in ad revenue during the first year.

All of this led to a very sharp decline in shares of what was then known as Facebook, and at one point during 2022, the stock was down 61% for the year. It's no wonder Mark holds a grudge against Apple even though META shares are up more than 300% from the bottom. The company's advertising revenues have recovered. In 2021, Facebook/META ad revenue was $114.93 billion. It decreased the following year to $113.64 billion before rebounding to $131.95 billion in 2023. Data for the full year 2024 is not yet available.
